I think that the participants in the picture are celebrating Singapore's 30th birthday and the birthday of the participant in the foreground as there are crowds wearing caps with the number 30 printed on it, some are holding Singapore flags and there is a cake hold by the lady with double-chin which I assume that she is celebrating her birthday.
The other two participants who are standing beside her are her family members as they're kissing on her cheeks and the Malay women which is in front her feel happy for her too. I can see that a broad smile is hanging on her face, tell me that she felt fortunate since her birthday falls on the same day as Singapore's birthday.
The weather seems to be hot and warm as there were participants holding umbrellas to shade themselves from the direct sunlight and they were excited of what's going on during the parade.

A time when i felt unloved
Saturday, August 1, 2009

There was a time when i felt unloved is when i am in Singapore studying, staying with my sisters. My parents will come here once in a time since my older brother is still in Indonesia. I felt unloved because my parents come more often when my older brother is here and my sisters always ask me to harmonize with him. When i asked them to buy something for me, they will say "no" without considering but when my brother asked, they will likely buy for him. I felt that it is not fair at all and i asked myself,"am i just a kid that they adopt?." Soon, i realised that it is not that they do not love me, but it is just that they want my brother to stay out of troubles.

Caught in a storm

Whenever there was a thunderstorm, i did not dare to step out of my house because i thought that the lightning will split me into two pieces. And there was also blackout during the storm which made me more scared because there was sudden flashes in the dark spooky room. Soon, when i grew older, i am not afraid of thunderstorms anymore

Dear Mr Ng

PROPOSAL ON DEVELOPING PULAU UBIN

I, President of the Green Plan 2012 Club, is sending a proposal to you regarding the development of Pulau Ubin. I have some suggestion from the residents.

First, from the headman of the island, Mr Mohamad Ismail Bin Adam aged 74 , said that a new clinic and a school for the locals is needed there since his grandchildren have to take a bumboat to the mainland to the clinic and school there. Therefore, he thinks that it is inconvenience without a clinic and a school.
Madam Chan Ah Mui, aged 45, former owner of a kiosk for bicycle rental, requested for good bus service, roads and infrastructure, as well as cycling tracks for people to travel easily.
Mr Chandran Mohan, aged 20, polytechnic student, who enjoy relaxing life wished to transform Ubin into a 21st century New Town and enjoying the best of both worlds. Besides, he suggested having some shopping facilities and nature at their doorstep. It is a relaxed way of life.
Mrs Tan Li Lin, aged 32, housewife and part time hawker assistant, wished to have reliable water supply as she hopes to start a coffee stall. And she thinks that water is an important supply due to a lot of campers and trippers.
Lastly, Melvin Koh, aged 16, an 'O' level student, thinks that this may destroy the natural beauty of the island and preserve Chek Jawa, the pride of Pulau Ubin, as a nature reserve.

I hope that you will consider those opinion stated above and try to satisfy the needs of the residents and hopefully you will reply me soon. Thank you.

Your faithfully
Nopianto Quek

Tornado wipes out towns!
Sunday, July 26, 2009

On Sunday a massive storm system including several destructive tornadoes passed through Minnesota and Iowa. A tornado in the St. Paul suburb of Hugo, MN, killed a two-year-old boy and left more than 40 homes in ruins. A tornado that passed through Parkersburg, IA, caused even more damage, killing four in Parkersburg and two in neighboring New Hartford. More than 222 homes were destroyed in the storm, heavily affecting the town of only 1,900 residents. The Parkersburg twister was reported to be nearly a mile-wide, and traveled for 43 miles before dissolving. Wind speeds reached 165 mph.

50% of Parkersburg is destroyed or heavily damaged. The city hall, high school, and only gas station and grocery store were destroyed. Iowa governor Chet Culver declared the affected counties disaster areas, and asked for federal assistance.

This storm and accompanying tornadoes followed storms in Oklahoma and Kansas on Saturday which killed at least two, and a stormy year overall. Read through the rest of the Daily Perspective to learn about how you can help the people of Hugo and Parkersburg, as well as reading about the hyperactive 2008 tornado season and some devastating tornadoes in the past.
